Oral Presentation "The Thermomechanical Influence of Curing Building Materials on Structural Behavior in a Repository"

From 8–10 July, 2025, colleagues of BGE and BGE TEC participated in the 11th International Conference on the Mechanical Behavior of Salt (SaltMech XI) in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. The conference provides an international forum for scientific exchange on the mechanical behaviour of salt – with applications ranging from energy storage and underground cavern construction to mining and the disposal of radioactive waste.

The contributions of BGE and BGE TEC focused specifically on topics related to the long-term safety of radioactive waste repositories in salt formations. Our teams were involved in the following presentations:

  • Treatment of Uncertainties in Numerical Modelling to Rate the Integrity of Rock Salt Barriers in Repositories Using Generic Models
  • Multi-scale Experimental and Numerical Analysis of Crushed Salt Material used as Engineered Backfill in a Nuclear Waste Repository in Rock Salt (MEASURES)
  • Morsleben Repository – Anhydrite Drift Seal Demonstration Structure
Poster presentation:
  • Hydraulic Evolution in the Shaft Sealing System of a Generic Salt Repository

These contributions reflect the ongoing research of BGE and BGE TEC in the areas of material modelling, numerical simulation, and the geomechanical and hydrogeological evaluation of repository systems – all aimed at ensuring the long-term safety of radioactive waste disposal in salt.
